Heat pumps — the range

Five pumps. One right answer per home.

These are the manufacturers we design with, what each is genuinely known for, and the numbers that matter. The one your home gets is chosen by the heat-loss survey — output, flow temperature and siting — never by brand loyalty.

01

Vaillant

aroTHERM plus

Premium German engineering with class-leading efficiency on natural refrigerant.

Retrofits that keep existing radiators — the high flow temperature covers homes where emitters can't all change — and anyone who wants the efficiency benchmark.

Refrigerant
R290 (propane, ultra-low GWP)
Output sizes
≈ 3.5 – 12 kW
Max flow temp
up to 75 °C
Seasonal efficiency
≈ 5.0 at 35 °C design
Noise
Very quiet — happy near patios and boundaries
02

Mitsubishi Electric

Ecodan (R290)

The UK's largest installed base — a reputation built on reliability and support.

Tight plots and noise-sensitive placements, and owners who value the deepest UK parts-and-service network over headline numbers.

Refrigerant
R290 (latest generation)
Output sizes
≈ 5 – 14 kW
Max flow temp
up to 75 °C
Seasonal efficiency
≈ 4.6 at 35 °C design
Noise
Ultra Quiet models around 45 dB at a metre — among the quietest made
03

Daikin

Altherma 3

Big-brand performance at a sharper price — efficiency close to the premium tier.

Best value-per-point-of-efficiency in the range — a strong default for well-insulated homes with low-temperature emitters.

Refrigerant
R32
Output sizes
≈ 4 – 16 kW
Max flow temp
up to 70 °C (HT versions)
Seasonal efficiency
≈ 4.6 – 5.0 at 35 °C design
Noise
Quiet, with a dedicated low-noise mode
04

Samsung

EHS Mono HT Quiet

High-temperature capability and smart-home integration at a competitive price.

Budget-conscious retrofits that still need hot radiator temperatures, and homes already run on smart-home platforms.

Refrigerant
R32
Output sizes
≈ 5 – 16 kW
Max flow temp
up to 70 °C
Seasonal efficiency
≈ 4.5 at 35 °C design
Noise
Quiet mode for night-time and close neighbours
05

Grant

Aerona3 / Aerona 290

Designed for the UK and Irish climate by an off-grid heating specialist.

Oil-boiler replacements and larger rural properties — big outputs, honest pricing, and a range that shines in damp UK winters.

Refrigerant
R32 (Aerona3) · R290 (Aerona 290)
Output sizes
≈ 6.5 – 17 kW
Max flow temp
up to 65 °C
Seasonal efficiency
up to ≈ 5.4 (13 kW unit) at 35 °C design
Noise
Quiet Mark accredited on popular sizes

Figures are manufacturer-published typical values at low-temperature design and vary by unit size and conditions. The right pump — brand, model and output — falls out of your heat-loss survey, not a league table: a correctly sized mid-range unit will outperform a poorly sized premium one every winter.

The survey picks the pump.

The biggest driver of your running cost isn't the badge on the unit — it's whether the pump is sized to your home's measured heat loss and fed by emitters running at the lowest workable flow temperature. A correctly sized mid-range pump beats a poorly sized premium one, every winter.

So we survey first: room-by-room heat loss, existing emitters, hot-water demand, where the unit can physically and acoustically live. The design lands on a shortlist from the range above, priced with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme already applied where your home qualifies — £7,500, rising to £9,000 when you're replacing an oil or LPG system off the gas grid.
